'Sideways' and 'Housewives' Top Globes
December 13, 2004
Award season began with a bang Monday morning, as Hollywood's
biggest and brightest received some golden news. What
a morning it was for the "Desperate Housewives,"
Jamie Foxx and so many others, and "Extra"
was with the ecstatic stars right after they received
the good news.
Teri Hatcher was just one of many happy "Housewives," as the show received a nomination for Best TV Musical or Comedy and amazingly, Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman, Nicolette Sheridan and Teri Hatcher all received individual nominations, making it the top nominated TV show.
"We all work so hard, and we're such a team about it," Teri told us. "We're just happy the show got this kind of recognition."
There's obviously a lot of excitement buzzing around the show, and Executive Producer Marc Cherry told us, "It's great, we're surprised and delighted and… relieved, I think."
One surprise, however, was that the extremely popular Eva Longoria didn't get a nomination. We caught up with James Denton, Wisteria Lane's mysterious plumber, and he assured us Eva will get plenty of awards before it's all said and done. "I was really shocked they could pick three of those women and not Eva," James admitted. "I'm sure it was a matter of limitations, because she's obviously a huge breakout star of the show. She'll get hers."
Along with the "Housewives," ABC's other freshman
hit, "Lost," raked in the nominations, and
"Extra" was on the Oahu, Hawaii, set Monday
morning where co-stars Matthew Fox and Evangeline Lilly
celebrated the show's nomination for Best TV Series.
"I'm really pleased and I feel like it's really
brought a great energy to the set today," Matthew
said. "It's very exciting."
Back in Los Angeles, the cast of "Arrested Development" was also excited as they celebrated their nominations for Best Musical or Comedy show as well as Jason Bateman's nod for Best Actor in a Comedy. "We're trying to accrue as many of these as possible so we can walk into some office at FOX and keep our little show," said Jason.
On the movie front, David Carradine, Nicole Kidman,
Kevin Spacey and even Andrew Lloyd Webber had plenty
of reasons to celebrate.
"It's a thrill, it really is," Nicole told us. "It's like being a kid and getting a pat on the back."
Nicole felt the magic from the set of "Bewitched," where she celebrated her seventh Golden Globe nomination, this time for Best Dramatic Actress in "Birth," the film that sparked controversy due to a bathtub scene with a 10-year-old boy. "I was really shocked because I thought this film was going to go unnoticed," she admitted. "I so didn't expect it. A lot of times, if you have a big film, you're hoping, whereas with this there wasn't even that much hope. You're like, 'Wow, what?'"
But Nicole has some tough competition; she's up against Scarlett Johansson, Hillary Swank and Uma Thurman.
Meanwhile, Kevin Spacey had plenty to sing about, but the Best Actor nominee had a tense morning: "It was the last category and I was the last name and they'd already read off one Kevin so I thought, 'well that's it.' So we were very happy."
Spacey's 4th nomination came for the Bobby Darin bio pic, "Beyond the Sea," which he also co-wrote, produced and directed. "It's a different feeling to be nominated for something where so much of your heart is in it," he revealed. "It's just incredibly satisfying. This was a real labor of love."
Kevin will go up against Jim Carrey and Jamie Foxx, who celebrated his 37th birthday with a record-setting three Golden Globe nominations: Best Actor for "Ray," Best Supporting Actor for "Collateral" and a TV Movie nomination for "Redemption." Jamie told "Extra" he even has a victory plan in place if he wins: "You know how I am, I will be at the after party with it right on my chain, man."
But Jamie's got killer competition: "Kill Bill: Volume 2" villain David Carradine, who was sweet as can be talking up director Quentin Tarantino this morning when "Extra" showed up. "We would not have been able to give those performances without Quentin," David insisted.
Meanwhile, the cast of "Jack & Bobby"
celebrated star Christine Lahti's Best Actress TV nomination,
and Christine joked to us that, "I think I should
get a lot more respect from the crew than I have been
afforded before."
Meanwhile, Edie Falco was thrilled that "The Sopranos" received another Best Series nomination, telling us, "It was very exciting."
And when "Extra" spoke with Drea de Matteo, she laughed, telling us, "I started off with one line on that show, and now I have an Emmy." And now possibly a Golden Globe to go with it.
Jeremy Piven received a nod for "Entourage" and hopes this will help more than just his career, noting, "I've just been nominated for a Golden Globe and I'm singe -- let the games begin (is that wrong to say?)"
Other nominated stars, including Mariska Hargitay of "Law and Order: Special Victim's Unit," have more low-key plans. "I've got a really early call tomorrow, so I'm going to go to sleep," she told us.
And speaking of sleeping, "Scrubs" star Zach Braff was woken up by his publicist with the good news, but admitted, "I thought it was the producer of the show telling me I overslept, which I am known to do. So I was excited."
But perhaps the nominee that turned everything upside down Monday morning lay in the movie side of the awards: the quirky independent film "Sideways" raked in seven nominations, including a Best Supporting Actress nod for Virginia Madsen.
Virginia shared the sweet victory this morning and revealed she celebrated with a pajama party: "The best part of this morning was my son with his sleepy little arms throwing them around my neck and saying, 'Good luck mom, break leg.'"
Virginia's big-budget competition includes screen queen
Meryl Streep for "The Manchurian Candidate"
and Cate Blanchett, who is just one of six nominations
for "The Aviator."
The one and only King of the World, Mr. Leo DiCaprio is also coming to the party as a Best Dramatic Actor nominee. He'll face off with "Finding Neverland's" Johnny Depp, "Kinsey's" Liam Neeson and "Hotel Rwanda's" Don Cheadle.
The Globes are the only awards that honor both TV and
movies together, and are seen by many as precursors
of the nominees that can be expected for the year's
Oscars and Emmys. Click
