Diving Into the Ocean
December 3, 2004
"Ocean’s 12" is coming to theaters, bringing Hollywood’s hottest stars together for the sequel to the original caper. "Extra’s" Jerry Penacoli caught up with George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Catherine Zeta Jones to uncover the secrets of filming the movie -- some that even the stars didn’t know. But these boys (and girl) had more fun than should be legal, and Jerry may have gotten more than he bargained for.
Producer Jerry Weintraub chose to shoot the movie
in Europe, so the cast camped out at George’s Italian
villa, which by all accounts must have been like
celebrity summer camp part vacation, part work.
"I didn’t… really…" Brad started to admit, before George cut him off, laughing, "You didn't work!"
And Matt was quick to agree: "Yeah, I didn't even work the week we were at George’s. I've been to George’s house, it's really great."
So how did Matt like it working with Catherine? "What a terrible, terrible decision to put you in this movie," Matt joked to his lovely co-star. "I told them not to."
But Catherine was more serious, confirming she jumped at the chance to get into the "Ocean" -- but did she have a secret plan to deal with all those crazy boys? "Julia and I are very similar with that," she said. "I think just being brought up with a whole bunch of guys, and if you can't beat them, join them."
George is actually an executive producer on the film, but that secret turns out to be news to Brad, who claims he had no idea he was actually working for his co-star.
"Did you ever even for a minute think of treating me a little differently, being a little nicer?" George asked him, to which Brad only said, "I'm sorry."
Maybe the bad blood goes back to the time that Brad beat out George for his star-making turn in "Thelma and Louise." Does George still nurse that wound? "Well, a lot of people don't know that he was up for ‘Return of the Killer Tomatoes,’ and he didn't get that," George shot back. "And I did. You cried for a week, didn't you?"
"I don't want to talk about it," Brad sulked.
But producer Jerry had his tricks to ease all the tension of this modern-day Butch and Sundance, by treating them exactly the same on the set: "We dressed them in dresses and high heels most of the time," Jerry revealed. "Brad and George look great like that."
We'll probably have wait for the outtakes reel for that -- for now we'll settle for "Ocean's 12," which steals into theatres December 10th.
