Phoenix and Witherspoon Bring Cash and Carter Back to Life
November 4, 2005

Johnny Cash was truly the king of Hollywood Thursday night, as Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon walked the red carpet in honor of the late first couple of country at the premiere of "Walk the Line."

"I hope they would be proud," Phoenix said of Cash and his beloved wife, June Carter.

"It's a great film," Witherspoon added.

The highly-anticipated biopic about the late country music legend and his wife, had the honor of opening Los Angeles' Annual American Film Institute Festival. And after the premiere, "Extra" went backstage with Phoenix, who bares a stunning resemblance to Cash in the film and also sang every note.

"To have a partner like Reese," Phoenix said, "I never could have found John if she hadn't found June and supported me the way she did."

The one-time Oscar nominee also told us about meeting Cash and Carter in person and discovering that the legend was a fan of his film "Gladiator."

"He stopped me on my way out and said, 'I just want to tell you I really like that film you did,'" Phoenix recalled. "It was wild. Seeing him and June together, that was unforgettable. I felt so fortunate to have had that experience."

Check out the acclaimed performances of Joaquin and Reese when "Walk the Line" opens nationwide November 14th.
