Is the Challenge Weighing on Ruben?
November 4, 2004
It's been three weeks since "Extra" moved Ruben Studdard to Hollywood to take on the biggest challenge of his life: lose weight and get in shape. "I'm going to do what I have to do to get the results," Ruben told us.
At first, we reported Ruben weighed 449 pounds, but now here are the official stats: the 6' 4" "American Idol" winner actually weighed in at an astonishing 455 pounds with 43.8% body fat.
Ruben gained nearly 100 pounds since winning "American Idol," so "Extra" brought together an extreme fitness team: trainer to the stars Gunnar Peterson, life coach Randy Jackson and Lindora diet guru Cynthia Graff. "Can you imagine what an inspiration he will be to millions of people?" Graff wondered.
Celebrity friends quickly weighed in with support, with Jay-Z saying, "Good luck Ruben, you know how to do it. Do your thing."
And Ruben's "American Idol" family rallied around their idol. Clay Aiken said, "I'm thrilled that he is ready for it."
While "Idol" judge Paula Abdul said, "It's going to be tough, but we're here for you Ruben, it's worth it." And Simon added, "I'm encouraging you, Ruben."
It seems Simon's skepticism may be well founded, given Ruben's hectic rock star lifestyle. Ruben has been on the road promoting his new gospel album, "I Need an Angel," with his first stop being "Live with Regis & Kelly."
To keep his diet on track in New York, our Tanika Ray brought Ruben a healthy meal from Mocca.
While Ruben seemed to be having fun with the diet to start with, by Week Two there were problems. "He didn't go into Lindora. He didn't pick up his meals," Randy Jackson told "Extra." "It's time for some tough love."
But Ruben didn't want any of it, telling us to turn off our cameras.
What caused Ruben to snap? Did he quit his diet? Find out tomorrow as we continue with Ruben's Weight Loss Challenge.
