Madonna Fires Back About Adoption Firestorm
October 25, 2006
There were cheers and tears Wednesday as Madonna opened up for the very first time about her African adoption scandal as she spoke via satellite to talk show queen Oprah Winfrey.
“I wanted to go into a third world country and give a life to a child who otherwise might not have one,” Madge dished to Oprah. “It’s pretty shocking,” Madonna added about the blaring headlines surrounding her decision.
As to the public attacks Madonna has suffered and to those who claim this act of kindness is a publicity stunt, Madge scolded, “I say to those people, shame on you!”
In this Oprah exclusive, a defiant Madonna tackled all the ugly rumors flying over her adoption of Baby David from an orphanage in Malawi. Madonna said her new son is now thriving in her London home.
“David is amazing,” the proud mommy admitted, as she unveiled the first family pictures of her two children and her new baby boy.
“What’s really surprised me is how great my children are with him,” the Material Girl said.
Madonna also said not to believe the published reports that David’s father didn’t want her to adopt the child.
“He looked into my eyes and said to me that he was very grateful, and that had he kept his son with him in the village he would have buried him,” Madge recalled.
So, is it true Madonna and husband Guy Ritchie sought adoption advice from fellow adopters Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie?
“I never had any discussions with Brad and Angelina about adoption; I’ve never actually met Angelina Jolie,” Madonna admitted.
Now, only on “Extra,” talk show host Ellen DeGeneres came to Madonna’s defense.
“If somebody is willing to take care of a baby, you should be able to just go ‘Here’s a baby that needs love; take it,’” Ellen said. “It shouldn’t be that hard.”
Madonna, who has set up a foundation in Malawi, also told Oprah that she plans to go back to the African nation with David at least once a year so that he may visit his roots and see his father.
