Melissa Etheridge Goes Back to School
October 12, 2005

With two Grammys, five platinum-selling albums and millions of fans, Melissa Etheridge is a rock icon. She’s also a breast cancer survivor, and now she’s adding "teacher" to her résumé.

Etheridge is on a mission for better cancer care, and she let "Extra" tag along as she turned a UCLA biology class into her own emotional school of rock for MTVU.

"I love speaking," Etheridge said. "I especially love speaking to youth, those who will make a difference in the future. I was trying to let them know that in this day and age cancer can be treated as a blanket, and that doesn't work."

Etheridge also shared her experiences with the future doctors, saying, "I’ve been a rock star since you were very young. I’ve done lots of things. I’ve never encountered anything as powerful as cancer."

The music legend is hoping to teach about the personal battle that comes with cancer. "So I wrote the song, ‘This is Not Good Bye, I’ll Be Back,’" Etheridge said.

And Melissa is back -- just one year after being diagnosed, Etheridge says she’s never felt better, and she has just released a greatest hits album featuring four new songs.
