Tom Cruise Goes Back to School
October 26, 2004
Fan frenzy took over Los Angeles Monday night as Tom Cruise hit the UCLA campus for the AFI/ DreamWorks event, "A Conversation with Tom Cruise," and our Jerry Penacoli got his own one-on-one time with the gracious star.
From "Risky Business" and "Top Gun" to "Rain Man" and "Jerry Maguire," Cruise has made many memorable movies, but he told Jerry he couldn't just pick one favorite. "It's like what's your favorite child," Tom explained. "They're all still a part of my life."
In the middle of our interview, Cruise was reunited with his "Last Samurai" co-star Shin Koyamada, and the pair discussed Tom's recent visit to Japan. "We went out and sang karaoke," Cruise revealed. "We go hard. We sang 'em all!"
Tom also talked about having his hand print taken -- which in Japan serves as their version of the Hollywood "Walk of Fame" -- and about throwing out the first pitch at a Japanese baseball game. "I threw a slider," Cruise admitted. "I told them beforehand, 'Look, I'm a third baseman, not a pitcher.'"
And Tom even got a surprise of his own, as his fans began yelling out lines from his movies. "You got it down," he told one fan who mimicked him in "Rainman." "I dig that about you." (Tom was quoting Cuba from "Jerry Maguire.")
What's in the future for Tom? In December, he'll join Oprah Winfrey to co-host the Nobel Peace Prize concert in Oslo. Meanwhile, his next movie, "War of the Worlds," with director Steven Spielberg, comes out in June.
So what can we expect when Cruise and his "Minority Report" director team up once again? "Spielberg on fire," Tom insisted. "And Cruise is going to bring it as hard as he can."
Looks like this Hollywood icon never stops giving us something to anticipate.
