Ruben's Makeover: Day One
October 18, 2004
D-Day for "American Idol" Ruben Studdard has arrived. The Velvet Teddy bear is settled in his Hollywood Hills house and all set to begin his "Extra" extreme makeover. Monday, Ruben weighed in and started trimming down with our fitness team.
Up until now, everyone thought Ruben weighed 360 pounds,
but "Extra" found out it's more than anyone
expected. After stepping on the scale, Studdard's weight
read 449 pounds. "Uhn, I broke it," joked
Ruben about the scale.
Looking on for the big weigh-in was "Extra's"
extreme fitness team headed by Randy Jackson, who is
serving as Ruben's life coach. Also on board were trainer-to-the-stars
Gunnar Peterson and Cynthia Graff from the Lindora Weight
Loss Clinic. "Ruben was a little nervous about
going public with his exact weight," Graff admitted.
And although Studdard weighed in at 89 pounds more than
everyone thought, he's got no need to worry -- "Extra's"
extreme fitness team has a plan. "I hope that we
can get him to lose at least 50 pounds," Jackson
told us. "That's the goal, 50 pounds in eight weeks."
Here's how Ruben will do it: he'll cut down from 4,000 to 1,500 calories a day with special meals delivered to his house. The diet consists of three meals a day including protein, vegetables, fruits and three protein snacks.
So now Ruben has the diet, the trainer and the life coach -- will it be enough? "We all saw Ruben's commitment in 'American Idol,'" Graff told us. "If we can apply the same kind of personal commitment and dedication, there's no question he'll do it."
"If I say I'm going to do it, I'll do it," Ruben assured us.
And "Extra" will be with him every step of the way with weekly weigh-ins, celebrity support and lots of other surprises, so stay tuned.
