Telling Tales
September 27, 2004 Any movie starring Robert De Niro, Will Smith, Martin Scorsese, Angelina Jolie, Jack Black and Renée Zellweger is bound to be a hit. We sat down with Will, Robert and Martin to learn how they dove into their underwater roles for the new computer-animated movie, "Shark Tale."
"Extra:" Will, you look like you had such a blast being the voice of the character, Oscar. How much fun was it for you?
Will Smith: There's no embarrassment in animation. You can do anything, you can be naked in a booth and it won't matter.
E: So were you naked?
Smith: Only twice.
E: Your character looks just like you in the movie, did you like the way he turned out?
Smith: I thought that he was sort of exaggerated you know, so it's interesting that you would say it looked just like me because I didn't necessarily feel it was close.
E: Robert, you play a big, bad shark in the film, do you think your animated character looked like you?
De Niro: It was close! No, not exactly.
E: Martin, you and De Niro are good friends. How was working together?
Scorsese: "We were encouraged a lot to improvise, so that was fun. We were able to draw on an old style, our relationship and years of timing.
E: What drew you guys to this film? Why did you have to make it?
Scorsese: My old friend Jeffrey Katzenberg said, "Marty, why don't you make a picture that your kids could see.'"
Smith: This one covers a good spectrum. I have a 3-year-old, a 6-year-old and a 12-year-old, they all loved the film. Jada loved it, and my mother did too."
And you can love it too, when "Shark Tale" splashes into theaters this Friday.
