Britney Marries Kevin in Stealth Wedding
September 20, 2004
Pop’s most unpredictable princess pulled off the surprise
wedding of the year, Saturday, and "Extra"
was with newlyweds Britney Spears and Kevin Federline
just hours before and then after the hush-hush ceremony.
Friday night found Kevin and pals swarmed by paparazzi
as he left his bachelor party at Houston’s restaurant
in Santa Monica. And by 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon,
a newly-brunette Britney was braving her own flashbulb
frenzy as she arrived in Santa Monica for a pre-wedding
spa appointment.
At 5 pm, the "chopperrazi" were buzzing Britney’s
Santa Monica hotel as police stood guard. Twenty family
members and friends were staying at the Fairmont Hotel
in Santa Monica, preparing for the dinner -- but instead
of dinner, the guests were shuttled to a modest private
home in Studio City, belonging to the groom’s tailor.
At 7:30 p.m., the quickie ceremony started and lasted
five minutes.
Spears wore a strapless white dress and Federline sported
a tuxedo while they exchanged their vows. Afterward,
the bridesmaids, who included Britney's little sister
Jamie Lynn, slipped into pink sweats. The groomsmen
also donned sweat suits, stenciled with the word "Pimps"
on the back. The couple and their guests then partied
the night away at a Hollywood hot spot.
People Magazine’s Senior Editor Jess Cagle says the
wedding took everyone by surprise: "She didn’t
tell her mother, she didn’t tell her sister. They showed
up thinking she was going to an engagement party, and
surprise." But at Sunday night’s Emmy Awards, Spears
certainly had her share of supporters. "It’s great,"
Ellen DeGeneres said. "She’s a young girl looking
for love. I just think we should give her a break."
These are the pop princess' second nuptials in nine
months. Spears married childhood friend Jason Alexander
June 2nd in Las Vegas, but annulled their marriage three
days later. Kevin and Britney announced their engagement
in June. There’s already talk about a pre-nup. Reports
are that the pop diva’s mom insisted Britney get one
to protect her $130 million fortune.
And only "Extra" has your exclusive first
look at the bridesmaids’ wedding gift bags. Spears gave
each one a Bolsa camouflage duffel bag with the Hebrew
words, "Power to heal," inscribed. The bag
also had a keychain with the newlyweds’ picture on it.
