VMAs Rock Miami!
August 29, 2005
Music's biggest stars arrived in droves at the MTV Video Music Awards in Miami Sunday night, and from Oscar winners to Grammy gold, leading ladies to platinum recording stars, the biggest names in Hollywood swooped in with high hopes for this year's awards show.
"Anything can happen" was the theme, and unfortunately, everything did. Madness erupted in Miami early Sunday when gunshots rang out at Kanye West's party. When the smoke cleared, record mogul Suge Knight had been shot.
At the awards show, stars like Alicia Keyes and Usher reacted to the violence. "It's terrible that it's constantly happening," Keyes said. "And that it constantly circles around the same person, it kind of lets you know something is wrong with that."
"I'm not a part of that," Usher added. "Nowhere near it."
Knight was lucky; he took a bullet in the leg and will be fine. And a relieved Ice-T tried to brighten the mood, saying, "I was nowhere around the accident!"
The other issue weighing on the stars' minds at the VMAs was Hurricane Katrina bearing down on New Orleans, and the guys from Green Day sent their well wishes to those in the storm's path.
"I just hope the people in New Orleans are able to take shelter and get out of there," they said.
Meanwhile, Beyoncé couldn't wait for the special tribute to her friend, the late Luther Vandross, Sunday night. "I love him so much," she said. "And I'm just so glad I got the opportunity to put my voice on the same song as him."
Of course, when you put stars, an awards show and the city of Miami together, there's bound to be a few parties. "I'm still recuperating," Jamie Foxx admitted. "When I got home [last night] it was about 7:30 [a.m.]. We had Eddie Murphy on stage, Colin Farrell, Shaq."
And while some stars flew solo, it was couple's night out for Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson, as well as Jessica Alba, who showed up with her boyfriend, Cash Warren.
Gwen Stefani arrived without husband Gavin Rossdale, admitting this has been, "An incredible, incredible year for me."
And the beautiful Eva Longoria also came sans basketball star boyfriend Tony Parker, saying, "He's in France playing with the national team."
But we did learn all about Longoria's secret crush. Right in the middle of our interview, Longoria went from star to star-struck fan when the object of her affection, Ricky Martin, walked up. "Oh my God, there's Ricky Martin," she screamed. "You don't understand. I waited in line for four hours when I was 12 to get a picture of him when he was in Menudo!"
So it seems all ended alright at the VMAs, the place where anything can happen and nearly everything did.
