Latin Grammys Honor Music Legend
August 31, 2004 Music legend Carlos Santana got a little help from his famous friends Salma Hayek and George Lopez, when he was named the Person of the Year by the Latin Grammys, Monday night in Los Angeles.
Music's hottest Latin stars are preparing for their huge night, and Lopez, who will host the event with Cheech Marin, told "Extra" he revamped the original idea for the show: "They wanted us to roast [Santana], but how could you roast somebody who's a saint? It's like calling Mickey Mouse a rat b*****d."
And Lopez is certainly not alone in his view: "I think [Santana is] the highest pride for the Latin community," Hayek insisted.
The musician, famous for hits like "Smooth," certainly knows how to draw in a crowd. "When do Latinos invade Century City?" Lopez joked. "Not since the janitor's strike years ago have there been that many of us here."
"It's like a talent on test at Santana Jr. High," Marin added.
Rob Thomas joined Santana to perform their smash hit "Smooth" just after the Back Eyed Peas and Dave Matthews each took turns rocking the house.
But it's not nearly over yet. The fiesta is set to continue Wednesday night in Los Angeles, when Lopez will preside over the Latin Grammys. Catch the show on CBS, September 1st.
