Moonmen Invade Miami
August 30, 2004

Miami stayed hot and steamy Sunday night, as the stars pranced around in their skimpiest outfits and arrival by yacht was the norm. With all the eye-popping moments and hot musical collaborations, it could only be MTV's Video Music Awards -- and from the arrivals to the after parties, "Extra" was there for the all the action.

Hip-hop ruled the 2004 VMAs, as Jay-Z and Usher gathered multiple moonmen. Outkast took home four awards, including Best Video, for "Hey Ya," while Jay-Z also scored four times with "99 Problems," including honors for Best Rap.

Usher rounded out the top winners, earning three awards, including Best New and Best Male. Other winners included "Naughty Girl" Beyoncé for Best Female and No Doubt's double-hitter for "It's My Life," which included Best Pop.

But as always, the VMAs were far less about who won and more about the performances, who arrived with who, who wore what and the wild and crazy happenings. This year's VMA red carpet was all about boats, bling and beauties by the bay. "The boat ride was majorly sexy," Usher said. "I don't know who else is going to do it like that. I did it first though."

Usher may have been the first to weigh anchor, but P. Diddy did up the dock with a huge yacht. Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony also water taxied into Miami, which Lopez claimed was one of her favorite towns: "I spend a lot of time working in Los Angeles, but this is definitely my second home, my favorite little second home."

Apparently funnyman Jimmy Fallon was one star who missed the boat. "MTV didn't want to pay to put me on a boat," he explained. "J Lo came on a boat; I came in a U-Haul."

And marking a big first for Lopez and Anthony, the newlyweds attended the same event together for the first time since their wedding. But they kept their distance on the red carpet.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z certainly weren't taking any pointers from Lopez and Anthony -- the pair was inseparable throughout the night and acknowledged each other while accepting their awards.

"I'm very proud," Beyoncé said of her boyfriend's six nominations. "I hope he wins, he definitely deserves it."

Reality TV's summer sensation Victoria Gotti arrived with her three sons, and she admitted that much of her time has been spent attempting to put the brakes on her boys: "It's not easy. I've been doing bed checks, room checks. I found a couple of girls in the room this morning around 5:30, and they were carefully and swiftly evicted."

America's favorite "Newlyweds," Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, were of course in Miami for the big event. But Nick admitted he was a bit preoccupied: "I'm just a little paranoid about the.... " "He's on boob patrol," Jessica finished. "I'm just making sure we don't have any wardrobe malfunctions," Lachey insisted.

The MTV darlings also told us whom they'd like to take over their show "Newlyweds." "Maybe Britney and Kevin will take the torch," Simpson said. "I think they'd be great, it would be a very entertaining show. We'd watch," Lachey added.

Spears was visibly MIA Sunday night, quickly sparking rumors that the pop princess skipped the big show to take a little walk of her own -- down the aisle. But "Extra" has learned that Spears decided to skip the VMAs to hang out in Malibu with her fiancê, Kevin Federline.

So it looks like overall it was a fun and successful night in Miami. Check out the full list of VMA winners below:
