Covergirl Evolution: A New Style of
Supermodel August
16, 2004 Is the supermodel era officially over? That's the question Vogue magazine delves into in its eye-popping September cover story, and "Extra" got a peek inside the pages.
With nine beautiful models on one cover, it can only be called a Vogue extravaganza. But if Gisele Bundchen and Karolina Kurkova are the only two you know by name, there's a reason. "These new girls don't have the exposure that the older generation did -- nor do they want it," explained Vogue's Sally Singer.
Singer gave us an exclusive look inside the September issue, in which Gemma Ward wears Vera Wang and Karoline sports Alexander McQueen. But the photo spread is so much more than gorgeous women donning great designers -- it's actually a snapshot of the next generation of covergirls.
And there's something different about these supermodels -- starting with Gisele. She's absolutely gorgeous and is dating superstar Leonardo DiCaprio, but Bundchen avoids the glitz, glamour and fame of the fashion world. "When you do magazines it's about selling clothes," Singer told us. "Her business is to wear clothes. She does it well. She goes home, she puts on the jeans and she's out of that picture."
The picture also includes fuller lives for these models of the moment. Isabeli Fontana, Natalia Vodianova and Liya Kebede are moms. Daria Werbowy is an artist and does charity work. And some of the girls even admitted they don't care about fashion.
"They view it as a job," Singer told revealed. "They have families, they have charities; they have other interests."
Find out why these gorgeous faces are setting new standards
in the fashion world when the September issue of Vogue
hits newsstands nationwide August 24th.
