The Keys to Cage's Success
August 12, 2004
When Nicolas Cage and Jerry Bruckheimer team up for
a movie, you know it's going to be a blockbuster --
and their upcoming "National Treasure" will
be no exception. "Extra" went behind the scenes
with the dynamite duo to get the scoop on their latest
blast: "National Treasure."
"This is what it's all about, it's the fantasy of making movies, this is the fun of it," the power producer told us.
In the film, Oscar winner Nicolas Cage plays an archeologist searching for a fortune hidden in the nation's capital by our founding fathers nearly 300 years ago. When we hooked up with Nick on the film's set, he told us how he got involved: "I just sort of jumped into it, and here we are getting dirty."
"I do like things that are off-beat," Nick admitted. "I like things to be a little bit sideways, but I was really attracted to it because I wanted to work again with Jerry Bruckheimer. It's number four for us. We did 'The Rock,' 'Con Air,' 'Gone in 60 Seconds' and now this."
Cage told us why he keeps going back to Jerry: "He always looks for something unique and unusual and encourages actors to try and find something that might not be the obvious choice. And I like working that way."
Cage and Bruckheimer's three tag-team efforts have grossed
more than $1 billion at the box-office, making Nic a
slick and legit action hero. But the modest Cage told
us, "Well, I'm really just trying to have fun with
this. If I am having fun with the part, I think the
audience will too."
Bruckheimer revealed to us that he's already writing scripts for two sequels to his smash hit "Pirates of the Caribbean," but in the meantime, you can hunt for "National Treasure" in theaters this fall.
