Cyberstalker Threatens Tom Brokaw via E-mail
August 6, 2004

Tom Brokaw covers the world for NBC News, but now the iconic nightly news anchor has become the story, after a New York man allegedly threatened him.

According to court papers, Steven Koplan sent about 3,500 e-mails to an address at MSNBC, including 13 that threatened Brokaw's life.

Last month, Brokaw spoke with "Extra" about some of the perils of being a journalist. "I get uneasy," he admitted. "I sometimes wonder, ‘Why am I doing this?’"

Brokaw is no stranger to threats. In 2001, he received a letter laced with Anthrax, which hospitalized one of his staffers. But the anchor insisted that the dangers he faced come with the territory. "I think it's what I do," he told us. "I don't have palpable fear where I’m immobilized. On the other hand, I haven't been blown up recently, and no shots have come close to me."

Prosecutors didn't comment on how close this latest threat came to the legendary news anchor. But Koplan is set to be arraigned next week.
