Hilary Swank Names Chad's Substance Abuse Reason for Split
July 5, 2006
Hilary Swank is dropping a break-up bombshell in the new Vanity Fair, revealing that she ended her marriage to Chad Lowe due to his past drug addiction.
Swank filed for divorce in March, breaking off her 13-year relationship with Lowe.
While Hilary looks radiant on the new cover, the actress was teary-eyed during the entire interview. “Yes, Chad has substance abuse problems,” Hilary admitted. “I took care of Chad, and I don’t want to carry that anymore.”
"She said it's like being on an emotional roller coaster,” revealed Vanity Fair’s Leslie Bennetts.
Although Chad has been drug free for three years now, Swank said her world was “turned upside down” because Lowe initially tried to hide his addiction. “When I found out, it was a shock because I never thought he’d keep something from me,” she confessed. “And yet, it was confirmation of something I was feeling that was keeping us from being completely solid.”
"It's an enormous change for her being alone, which she's never been in her life,” Bennetts added. “I think she’s feeling very volatile. One minute she’s really exuberant and happy to be starting a new chapter in her life, and also there’s a lot of sadness.”
Hilary and Chad appeared happy when Swank picked up her second Oscar in 2005, and Hilary proclaimed onstage, “I thank Chad everyday. Chad knows how thankful I am for him, for everything that he is.”
Now Hilary says she’s in a better place, although she’s still trying to adjust to life without the man she began dating when she was just 18 years old.
“I’m the happiest I’ve ever been,” Hilary stated. “It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but I know I’m doing the right thing for myself.”
But Swank said she’s not ready to start dating anytime soon, saying, “I can’t imagine going out right now and trying to find someone else to be with.”
"Every time she goes to a movie with her publicist, the paparazzi have her fixed up with a new romance,” Bennetts said.
While Chad isn’t commenting on the article, you can make your own comments after you read more about Swank’s split in Vanity Fair, on newsstands this week.
