Drawing on the Stars
July 26, 2004

From Keanu and Gwyneth to Bruce and Sarah Michelle, Hollywood's kings and queens are making movies based on comic books, and while superheroes may have ruled until now, the stars' latest outings prove there's more to the genre than capes.

We caught up with the stars as they got a heroes welcome at Comicon, the annual San Diego comic book convention, the comics industry's largest and most important event. "This whole place is about heroes," Keanu Reeves told us.

Jude Law stars in the upcoming comic-inspired flying fantasy "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow," and he told us the movie had him soaring high with two old friends, Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie. "It was a great opportunity for me to work with Gwyneth again, and with Angie, who I'd known some 10 years."

Meanwhile, Jessica Alba gave us a tantalizing sneak peek of her work with Bruce Willis in the hard-hitting new actioner "Sin City," and told us she insisted on some changes when it came to bringing her character to the screen. "It was originally drawn naked," she revealed of her sexy dance scene. "But I couldn't really imagine my father seeing me butt naked."

However, co-star Rosario Dawson, was more than glad to show off -- her new hair, a short, blonde bob. "I did it yesterday," she told us.

For dedicated sci-fi goddess Sarah Michelle Gellar, the hardest part of the three months she spent in Japan shooting the horror-chiller "The Grudge" was learning that actors' opinions in that country are about as valued as the yen. "I'm like ‘Oh, well I think--' and sort of a collective gasp comes from the crew," she remembered. "I think they got pretty used to me, though."

And Keanu, star of the new supernatural thriller "Constantine" commiserated with his co-star, Djimon Hounsou, about his next project -- birthday number 40. But don't feel too sorry for him. "I'm gonna do everything, I'm gonna get the car, the girl, the young girl," he revealed. "No, at least have a birthday cake."

And it looks like comic fans should soon have a lot to celebrate, as well.
