Hooking Up Halle & Denzel
July 20, 2004

Big-screen sex-kitten Halle Berry was the cat's meow at last night's Hollywood premiere of her new action-adventure epic, "Catwoman," causing even Halle's beautiful on-screen nemesis Sharon Stone and other superstar guests to do double-takes as the Oscar-winner made a stunning entrance wearing favorite designer Roberto Cavalli.

"It's surreal," Halle told us of the scene, as hundreds of fans screamed for her. "I guess I'm always surprised that people actually turn up. I really, really am. And it seems like it keeps growing and growing. It's amazing"

The celebrated actress also confided a surprising secret about her own image of herself, telling us that when she first saw herself in the movie, she felt, "Sheer terror, but I'm terrified of seeing myself in action. I think ‘that's not my voice, I didn't say that, they've dubbed it.' It's bizarre."

Meanwhile, co-star Sharon looked pretty spectacular herself after getting into tip-top shape to play the movie's villain. And though she admitted she hadn't kept up her work-out routine, she laughed that, "the leftovers are okay. I've been kind of a lazy pig, but I'm okay."

Sharon also revealed the very latest on plans for a long-awaited sequel to her signature movie "Basic Instinct," telling us, "Apparently we're making it. I approved a list of directors and actors today."

But Sharon wasn't confirming any leading men: "We're just knowing who we're thinking of until we get a director and talk to him about who he might like."

Meanwhile, the cat's leading man, Benjamin Bratt turned up with sultry actress wife Talisa Soto, who admitted it wasn't easy watching Benjamin's sexy love scenes with Halle: "Do I like to see other women kissing those beautiful lips? Of course not. Maybe if I close my eyes, you know."

But Talisa's got nothing to worry about; her hunky hubby says he only has eyes for her. "At the end of the day I have the most amazing woman waiting for me at home and I always respect that," Benjamin told us. "That's my sanctuary. That's my life."

And what would the "Catwoman" premiere be without a purrrfectly good "Extra" surprise for Halle? A surprise named Denzel, who we were with at the same time in New York, for the premiere of his own summer blockbuster, "The Manchurian Candidate," a film full of Washington intrigue (of both the Denzel and D.C. varieties).

So what intrigues Denzel? How about an on screen pairing with Halle. "I got a project that could be interesting for she and I," Denzel told us, except, "She makes too much money, we can't afford her!"

But Halle wasn't having any of that: "Oh, that's the lamest cop out I've ever heard Denzel, come on!" she told him. "Give me another one, give me another reason!"

Okay, then -- how about the time Denzel caught Halle with her hair down? "Oh yeah, we saw each other at a stoplight," Halle recalled. "I was on my way to a photo shoot and I had this doo-rag on my head and I would roll up next to Denzel Washington. Great!"

Either way, the Denzel-Halle production will have to wait, because the Oscar-winner was a little busy with his own premiere and his own screaming fans. Nor could his Oscar-winning co-stars, John Voight and Meryl Streep, whose powerful character is drawing comparisons to a certain first lady.

"Hillary Clinton?" laughed Meryl. "Why? Because she has brown hair and is from the South and is conservative? Are those the similarities?"

Controversy aside, the remake of the 1962 Frank Sinatra thriller is already getting rave reviews. "When you touch a film that's a classic, that's tricky," Denzel admitted. "But from everything I'm hearing, we pulled it off!"

You can become a Washington insider on July 30th, when "The Manchurian Candidate" opens in theaters. Meanwhile, "Catwoman" starts clawing up screens July 23rd.
