Bob Barker Battles Skin Cancer
May 4, 2005 He's
the king of TV's longest running game show "The
Price is Right," but now beloved TV host
Bob Barker has opened up to "Extra"
about his frightening battle with a deadly form
of skin cancer.
"I'm going to have surgery on Friday the
13th," he revealed, adding, "I didn't
choose the date."
Barker admits to being careless in his youth.
"I was in the sun from the time I was a kid,"
he told us. "We went to every beach in the
world practically and were by our pool all the
time."
And now Bob Barker regrets it all; doctors have
found the potentially life-threatening skin cancer
on his ear and back. "It catches up with
you," he admitted. "The lesion on my
back is premelanoma and they're very serious.
They want to be careful and get that out. It's
serious stuff, absolutely."
After the surgery, Barker will need recovery time,
so he cancelled his appearance on the upcoming
Daytime Emmys. Barker has fought skin cancer before,
and he's optimistic he'll win the battle again.
Actress Mariska Hargitay is involved with the
Bring a Buddy skin cancer screening program and
was shocked to hear the news. "It's the number
one killer right now," she revealed.
And the 81-year-old game show host had advice
for us all: "I urge anyone who has spent
some time in the sun, whether you're doing it
now or not, go to a dermatologist once a year."
