Mel's Daytime Dance with Ellen
March 9, 2005
Ellen DeGeneres is luring out one of the most reclusive stars on the planet. In a surprisingly candid interview on the daytime dancing queen's Thursday show, superstar Mel Gibson opens up about his kids, his wife and his other "Passion."
"I got so many cards and letters from people saying they couldn't take their Aunt Martha because some of the scenes were too intense," Gibson said about his hit film, "Passion of the Christ."
The solution? Mel is re-releasing "Passion," which has been re-cut without six minutes of the most brutal scenes, on Friday. The $370 million mega-hit will be out just in time for Easter.
Mel also revealed to "Extra" that there's another budding filmmaker at home: his 17-year-old son. "He's actually quite talented," Gibson said. "I'm very proud of him."
Mel and his wife Robin are about to celebrate their
25th wedding anniversary, and coincidentally, it's at
the same time as their 24-year-old daughter's engagement.
"It was very romantic," Mel admitted. "The
guy did the whole thing, and he actually came to ask
for my advice. We were on a rooftop in Italy. I almost
"I was just joking with him and said, 'You're going to have to come up with a couple of horses, a cow and a goat for the exchange for the woman,'" Gibson continued. "And I came to my office a month later and there were all these farm animals in my office. So I thought the guy was a keeper."
Meanwhile, Gibson still has six other kids at home. So what's left for the man with everything? An island, of course. Mel recently bought one near Fiji. So what does he plan to call it? "Melville," he joked.
