Courting Luck for Oscar Night
February 8, 2005
It was the ultimate Hollywood power lunch as this year's Academy Awards nominees got together Monday for some superstar chow and chatter at the Beverly Hilton for the annual Oscar Nominee Luncheon. "Extra" was there to get the inside dish on some secret charms the stars will be carrying for luck on the big night.
"Being Julia's" Annette Bening revealed she'd be wearing her good luck charm right on her arm -- in the form of hubby Warren Beatty. "My husband is my good luck charm," Annette insisted. "I think we both feel lucky that we have each other."
Cate Blanchett of "The Aviator" says she'll have her lucky charm right at hand, too and, appropriately, it comes from the character she played in the movie: the late great Katherine Hepburn. "I've got a special pair of white gloves I might put in my bag," she revealed.
Cate's famed director Martin Scorsese is also taking
something special along, telling us, "It's something
my mother gave me, so I keep it on me a lot." But
Martin wouldn't tell us what is was, saying, "I
keep it private."
So what about the star of "The Aviator," Leo DiCaprio? "I don't know, I'm not a superstitious kind of guy," Leo admitted. "My theory is you hope for the best and expect the worst."
Meanwhile, "Sideways" star Virginia Madsen told us her lucky charm is real kids' stuff: "It's usually some little toy from my son. So yeah, it'll probably be his little skeleton Lego man."
And you won't believe what "Million Dollar Baby" star Hilary Swank is banking on: "I like pennies. Pick it up and you'll have good luck. So maybe I'll find a penny that day. I don't know."
And we'll find out whose lucky charms worked come Oscar night.
