Online Auctions
Weekend August 4/5, 2001

Raise your hand, make a bid. It's an exciting way to buy. Now the real auction action is on-line. Nearly 6.2 million buyers each month pointing and clicking their way to two and a half billion dollars in cyber sales last year.

Oh sure, there may be lots of on-line auction sites. But if we say, "name one," you'll say … E-Bay.

Internet expert Lisa Lillien says, “E-Bay is definitely the place to buy or sell things on-line."

She should know. She has survived tons of transactions and shows us how it works. The seller sets the rules, deciding price, length of auction, opening bid and the all important item description.

Here are a few tips on buying one of the six million new and used items on E-Bay. Jim Griffith, AKA Uncle Griff the smiling face of E-Bay customer service, says you should avoid the emotion of bidding. Research. Decide what you want to pay.

He says, “Then bid that amount and walk away. E-Bay will then execute your bid against all other comers and then you don't have to keep going back and forth to the auction to see if you've been outbid."
