Los Angeles cardiologist Dr. Herbert Stein believes traditional rehab is the best way to get back on track after a stroke. But others add alternative treatments to help them recover.
Today, no one would know that 11 years ago film producer Elizabeth Yoffe suffered a paralyzing stroke. Acupuncture got her walking and working again. She says, “I was able to have the tension that happens in the body from stroke alleviated.”
Acupuncturist Christina Marino inserts sterilized needles into different points on Elizabeth's body. Christina says, “By doing those points you get more chi which is energy circulation. It helps with numbness, pain, and sensitivity.”
Five years ago, a massive stroke left Bill Carruthers completely paralyzed on his left side.
He's trying electro-current therapy to rebuild his muscles and noticing some improvement. Chiropractor Dr. Frank Bredice says, “We introduce an electrical current to a part of the body to stimulate a muscle and to increase the blood flow.”
Dr. Bredice says that increased blood flow helps repair damaged muscles and nerves.
Patricia Wandler's stroke left her unable to think clearly. She says, “I couldn't remember words, didn't know my ABC’s, couldn’t read a thing.”
Patricia says hyperbaric therapy helped restore what she lost. Dr. John Cassidy of the Hyperbaric Oxygen Clinic in Santa Monica, California says while lying in a pressurized chamber, oxygen is carried to the brain making new blood vessels, bringing dormant brain cells back to life. He says, “You give them their oxygen and they have the capacity to go back to work again.”
It’s very controversial: some neurologists say it doesn't work. But Patricia is a believer.
Three alternative treatments, one goal: overcoming the odds.
