Marliu Henner's New Book
Monday August 20, 2001

She's fit and fabulous at 49. But actress Marilu Henner says 15 years ago she was a disaster. She says, "My first year on ‘Taxi,’ it was terrible. I would literally fast from you know Monday till Friday till doing the show and then I would like pig out on the weekends.”

Henner topped the scales at 174 pounds and then got wise - penning books that shun dairy, sugar, and caffeine but, it was the birth of her two sons that prompted her latest book, “Healthy Kids: Help Them Eat Smart and Stay Active--for Life!" ”

Henner says, “I call it the sugar treadmill or kiddie cocaine.”

Mom Natalie Farrell agrees, “Candy is always being handed out, even if you don't purchase it.”

Henner took Farrell and her daughters Julia and Isabelle on a healthy shopping spree at New York's Citarella. Henner says, “What's great is that you brought your daughter shopping because this is the time to get them involved.”

Henner's tips? First, shop the perimeters of the market - think natural. She says, “Anything that has a big paragraph to describe it or if your child can't pronounce it, stay away from it.”

Henner says avoid the temptation to allow your kids to snack on fast food or sweets. “Kids aren't going to fast, they're going to eat something and they'll start eating those cut up fruits and vegetables.”

Next, avoid most meat, sticking to fresh fish and organic chicken. Henner also points out to look for whole grains and a consistent diet of healthier foods, something that will help you when you hit that dreaded bakery counter. She says, “When they do taste these things, they're going to be a little bit too sweet and they won't eat as much.”

It looks like Henner's work is done here, so bon appetit!
