Ovarian Cancer
Monday
August 13, 2001
What do “Sex and the City's” Kyle Maclachlan, supermodel Molly Sims and fashion designer Donna Karan all have in common?
They, like many in the entertainment and fashion industries, have lost people they love to ovarian cancer. Kyle says, "My mom actually died from complications due to ovarian cancer in 1986 and so since then I always felt I needed to do something."
|
That's why Kyle and his co-star Kristin Davis are hosting this super Saturday event in the Hamptons to raise money for the ovarian cancer research fund. “This is something that's definitely close to me and important to the heart.”
Molly Sims and Donna Karan both lost their friend Liz Tilberis to the disease. The former Harper’s Bazaar editor was 46 when she was diagnosed. She used her celebrity to wage a very public battle with the disease. She died six years later.
Liz was one of the 25,000 women who are diagnosed with the disease every year. Jamie Boris, executive director of the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, says knowledge is power when it comes to fighting this disease. “One of the challenges with ovarian cancer is that the signs and symptoms are subtle and hard to diagnose.”
Symptoms like bloating, indigestion, abdominal discomfort,
fatigue, loss of appetite, fever and nausea. Jamie says,
“So it's important if you have these symptoms and they
persist go to your doctor.”
Molly Sims says, “So many girls, especially my age don't even really realize that they need to be checked. So it's just getting the word out there.”
Because these stars want you to know an early diagnosis could save your life.
