Lasik Eye Surgery
Wednesday July 25, 2001

Lasik eye surgery, for some it leads to perfect vision. For others, it can be a perfect nightmare.

Marty Smith was sick of his coke bottle glasses. Doctors told him he was the perfect candidate for Lasik eye surgery, but they were wrong. He says, “If I had to do it all over again and know what my options were this would have never happened. I have halos around lights. I see stars, like if you are looking at Christmas lights, the starbursts. The sharpness of my vision has left me, and I have no night vision whatsoever."

Even a second Lasik procedure didn't correct his problems.

The operation uses a laser to reshape the cornea and improve its focus. But up to 5-percent endure serious vision impairment. While Marty's complications were clear immediately, doctors say they don't know if results will last or worse. Sometimes patients won’t develop problems 5, 10 or 15 years into the future.

Dr. David Schanzlin, from the U.C San Diego Shiley Eye Center specializes in repairing botched Lasik surgeries. He says, “This is still surgery, it does involve cutting on the eye. Many times the patient will overlook the potential for problems because they just believe their friend had good results so they're going to have great results as well."

Schanzlin says Lasik is not for everyone. People with large pupils or thin corneas shouldn't have the surgery. So take a warning from Marty before you go under the light. Make sure your eyes are wide open.
