Gyrotonics

Workouts
like kickboxing, Tae Bo, pilates and yoga and
products like the Ab roller, all promise to "tone
the torso." And now this!
|
It may look like the millenium version of a torture chamber but it's actually the latest thing in fitness.
It's called the Gyrotonic Expansion System and “Extra” found it at Harmony Studios in Los Angeles. Trainer Caroline Aizawa says, “It's a system of exercise that simultaneously strengthens and stretches the body, increases flexibility and mobility, and increases your balance and coordination."
In other words "core training," the latest buzzword in fitness. Strengthening not just the abdominals but also the lower back muscles that help us stand and sit without falling over.
Caroline says, “I have a lot of people who come in because they are golfers and they want to increase their shoulder rotation. I have people who come in and they have stiff backs and they want to mobilize and get loose again … It's a lot of movement in the spine so if there are loose ligaments you can really just kind of pull apart so it's a lot of stretching."
And for most of us, stretching is a good thing. After
all, there's nothing like a strong, mobile torso when
carrying groceries, lifting kids or just getting out of
a chair.
