Sunscreen Checklist

A sunscreen with an SPF of 15 is ideal. Any higher is overkill. It does not give you that much more protection and may be harmful because of the increased absorption of a higher concentration of chemicals. The effects are still not known. And may be especially unhealthy for kids.

Look on the label and make sure that the sunscreen you are buying contains one or more of the following: Zinc, Titanium, or Parsol1789

Make sure that it is waterproof not just water-resistant.

If there is an insert to the product check it and see that the sunscreen is a fully broad-spectrum sunscreen. It should say full UVB or UVA coverage.

Remember brand is not the answer to a good sunscreen. The ingredients are what matters the most. So check the label before buying any brand.

Always apply sunscreen every hour.

Special attention should be paid when children under the age of five are exposed to prolonged sunlight. They should be covered as much as possible in cotton cloths or better yet photo protective clothing. Exposed areas should be covered with sunscreen but caution should be used not to put too much on. Too much exposure to the chemicals in sunscreen is not good for children.
