Whether you’re lounging by the pool or bathing on the beach, everyone agrees you need protection from the sun. With so many sunscreen products on the market, how do you know you’re getting the right SPF factor for your skin? More importantly, how do you know you’re paying the right price?

- Remember brand is not the answer to a good sunscreen.
The ingredients are what matters the most. So check the label before
buying any brand.

“There’s
a kind of numbers game that goes on in the marketing of
sunscreens,” says Los Angeles dermatologist Dr. Douglas
Hamilton.
Dr. Hamilton says consumers are often mislead by paying
for those sky-high SPF's like 45 or 50. He says, “There's
not much of an advantage for being over 15 with an SPF.”
In fact, Dr. Hamilton says SPF's over 15 may be dangerous,
especially for children, because of the high concentration
of sunscreen chemicals absorbed by the body.
High priced sunscreens don’t mean better protection. Dr.
Hamilton says, “I don’t think there’s any reason to overpay.”
And remember, don’t overexpose. If you've just gotta bake
this summer, at least you won't burn.
