Getting
Started
Use Your Appetite-Control Gene: Your appetite-control
gene makes leptin, a natural substance that
travels from fat cells to your brain to
reduce your appetite. Unfortunately, many
people have lost control of their appetites.
Two things allow this natural hunger-control
switch to work optimally. First, avoid severe
calorie limits. Simply multiply your ideal
body weight by 10 to find the minimum number
of calories you need daily to keep your
appetite in check. Second, low-fat foods
boost leptin's appetite-taming effect. So
choose a veggie chili over the meaty variety
and spaghetti marinara over pasta with cream
sauce.
Shut Down Your Fat-Building: Scientitsts
have found that chromosome 8 makes a fat-storing
enzyme, which builds your body fat almost
entirely from fat in the foods you eat.
If you avoid animal fats-found in meats,
dairy products, and eggs-and keep vegetable
oils to a bare minimum, you can virtually
shut down this fat-builder.
Don't Avoid Carbs, Just Be Selective: Many
people avoid white bread because its natural
sugars pass quickly into the bloodstream,
temporarily slowing your fat burning. But
rye bread releases its sugars much more
slowly, and pumpernickel even more so--they
don't interfere with fat-burning. Similarly,
baking potatoes release their sugars very
quickly, while new potatoes release them
nice and slowly. And the same is true of
instant oatmeal, compared to old-fashioned
oatmeal. So don't fear carbs; just be choosy.
