FOODS TO KEEP ON HAND (Use as Needed)
Advice from Howard Shapiro Medical Associates, P.C.

BEVERAGES: All unsweetened or artificially sweetened

  • Coffees and Teas Crystal Light, Diet Snapple, Nestea, Mystic, etc
  • Soda: all diet soda (orange, chocolate, cherry cola, cream)
  • Seltzer: plain or flavored (check label for calories if product is "naturally sweetened")
  • Hot cocoa mixes: 20-50 calories (Swiss Miss, Carnation Diet) Avoid mixes of 60 calories and above
  • Milkshake mixes: 70 calories (Weight Watchers, Alba Fit & Frosty)

FRUIT: raw or cooked, no added sugar (Try baked apples!)

FROZEN DESSERTS:

Soft Serve: any nonfat frozen yogurt, sherbet, etc. (maximum 25 cals/oz.)

  • Examples: American Glace, Skimpy Treat, Italian ices, TCBY or ICBY nonfat, Columbo Lite, etc.

Hard-pack pints (maximum 400 cals/pint):

  • Examples: Dannon Lite, Sharon's Sorbet, American Glace, Tofutti Free

Creamsicle, Fudgsicle, Popsicle (maximum 45 cals/pop):

  • Examples: Welch's Fruit Juice Bars (no added sugar) Weight Watcher's Chocolate Mousse Weight Watcher's Orange-Vanilla Treat Sugar-free fudgsicles and creamsicles Crystal Light Fruit Bars Cool & Creamy

CANDY:

Any chewing gum or hard candy

  • Examples: lollipops, sourballs, gumballs, candy cane

Popular brands:

  • Anna Raskas (mocha rum, peaches & cream, chocolate, etc.)
  • Tootsie Pops Blow Pops
  • Jolly Rancher
  • Werther's butterscotch
  • Hershey's Tastations

Note: "Dietetic" and Sugar-free" candy have the same calories as regular candy, but don't promote tooth decay.

VEGETABLES: All raw and cooked vegetables - the more, the better! Be creative with low calorie condiments listed below, or, ask for recipe suggestions.

SEASONINGS & CONDIMENTS:

  • Oil free and/or low calorie salad dressings
  • Nonfat mayo - nonfat sour cream - nonfat yogurt (plain or w/Nutrasweet)
  • Mustards: Dijon, pommery, etc.
  • Tomato: puree, tomato paste, tomato sauce
  • Juice: clam juice, tomato juice, V-8 juice, lemon or lime juice
  • Butter: Butter Buds, Molly McButter
  • Nonstick sprays: butter or olive oil flavor
  • Vinegars: balsamic, cider, wine, etc.
  • Horseradish: red or white
  • Sauces: salsa, cocktail, tamari, soy, A-1 sauce, Worcestershire, barbecue, ketchup, duck sauce, chutney, relish, etc.
  • Onion: fresh, juice, flakes, or powder
  • Garlic: fresh, juice, flakes, or powder
  • All herbs: basil, oregano, tarragon, thyme, rosemary, marjoram, dill, chives, sage, bay leaves, etc.
  • All spices: cinnamon, cloves, ginger, cumin, nutmeg, coriander, curry, paprika, allspice, etc.
  • Extracts: vanilla, almond, peppermint, maple, coconut, etc. Cocoa powder
  • Soups
