Roy Scheider Divorce

August 17, 2001
Forget Tom and Nicole, and Dennis and Meg are old news. There's a new Hollywood divorce making headlines and this time, the woman really wants to throw her ex to the sharks. Cynthia Scheider says, “When you break the law, you have to go to jail."
|
She is the ex-wife of “Jaws” star Roy Scheider. Cynthia claims her husband of 27 years owes her more than a million dollars and she wants to have him thrown behind bars. She says, “He said he will not pay it and no judge is going to tell him what to do with his money.”
The Sheider’s married in 1962 and divorced back in 1989. Cynthia says Roy quit making payments stipulated in their divorce agreement, so she went to court. In 1995, a judge ordered Scheider to pay more than $350,000. In 1996, he was ordered to pay almost $600,000 more. But Scheider never paid up and all that money has added up for the “All That Jazz” star. Today, with interest, he owes $1.4 million claims Cynthia’s lawyer, Ira Garr.
Garr says, “You go to him to ask if he has a bank account, he doesn’t show up at a deposition. You ask to have his accountants come and talk about finances, they don’t show up.”
Thursday Scheider did it again. At a hearing in New York, Scheider was a no-show, as was his lawyer, who claimed to be stuck in traffic. The judge even called highway patrol himself, saying, “I have been assured that the Long Island Expressway is now opened and that traffic is moving."
So is Scheider simply strapped? He's keeping his mouth shut, but Cynthia points out he does own a lavish mansion in the upscale Hamptons. Fed up, Cynthia's filed a contempt of court motion that could mean pay up or go to lockdown.
