Freddie Prinze Jr
Wedneday August 15, 2001

He plays a young pitching ace in the upcoming film Summer Catch and will star along side his fiancée Sarah Michelle Gellar in Scooby-Doo. But in this weeks Parade magazine, Freddie Prinze Jr. tells contributing editor Dotson Raider about a more serious subject, learning about his father’s tragic death.

Dotson says, “He got into a fight with a neighborhood boy when he was eight years old, and the boy got angry and said, ‘Your father was a junkie and he shot himself.’"

Freddie’s father was the star of the 70's hit "Chico and the Man." In 1977, Prinze killed himself. He was 22, Junior was only 10 months old. Dotson says, “He saw it as abandonment. That sense of anger about his father haunted him all his life.”

Young Freddie pulled away from kids his age and struggled in school. At 18, Prinze came to Hollywood with something to prove. Dotson says, “He wanted to do what his father had done, but succeed at it.”

Junior did make it big and a strong faith has helped him steer clear of drugs, but there's still one thing this star is praying for. Dotson says, “He wants to be a father. I don’t know if Sarah knows, but he wants lots of kids!”
