Rick Springfield Talks About His Accident
Monday August 6, 2001

It was just last week, on a Las Vegas stage, that Rick Springfield took a terrifying 30-foot fall. Lucky to be alive, for the first time he's talking about the freak accident, only to “Extra.”

He says, "I went into shock when I was going down."

With more than 1500 horrified fans looking on, Rick plummeted during a fight scene in his show, EFX Alive, when a beam of wood that was supposed to lower him to the stage gave way.

He says, "I grabbed it the other night and as I pushed off, I felt it shutter like that, and I knew something was wrong and I felt it free fall. It free fell about 30 feet."

Rick was rushed to University Medical Center, and miraculously suffered only a broken arm and some bruises. He says, "God I was so lucky to not have cracked my skull or broken my back."

The sexy former soap star stepped into the starring role of the glitzy Las Vegas show last January, bringing rock and roll energy to the 6-year-old production.

EFX Alive, with its 30 tons of scenery, is billed as the biggest special effects show in the world, and for a performer, one of the most challenging. Rick says, "There's elements of danger to the show and it kind of comes with the territory."

Max Zurflueh says, “We've been pretty much accident free since the start of the show and we hope to keep that record going."

That's what stage manager Max told “Extra” last year. But with the snap of a single cable last week, that record was broken. Fortunately for Rick, his injuries were not life threatening. He says, "I'm gonna be fine."

Rick Springfield will return to the EFX stage in three weeks. Until then, his understudy will be performing in the role.
