The Clift Hotel
Wednesday August 1, 2001

Last night tinseltown was partying it up in the city by the bay. This big bash isn't for a premier or an awards party. It's for the grand re-opening of a posh 5-star hotel designed to cater to a Hollywood star's taste for chic.

It's called Clift and it's destined to be one of the hippest hotels on the west coast. The lobby is an eclectic collection of whimsical furniture and trendy art. It's all the vision of one man, hotel magnet Ian Schrager.

He says, “My basic idea in doing a hotel is to take that simple utilitarian function of renting a bed to sleep and turn it into something emotional, visceral experience, lift your spirits.”

Since the swinging '70's, Schrager's style has been a magnet for stars. What began with New York’s famed 'studio 54' has turned into a hotel empire that includes trendy spots worldwide. Now San Francisco joins the A-list.

Liz Hurley says, “This is gorgeous it's really nice.”

Schrager spent 50-million dollars renovating the Clift to fit his signature boutique style. Chic isn't cheap. Suites here can run up to $2,000 a night! That includes hobnobbing with the elite in the “living room,” dining in the world-renowned Asia de Cuba restaurant, and sipping a martini in the legendary redwood room.

Ian says, “The idea was to smarten up the room, bring it to the 21st century without losing its spirit.”

It's old world grandeur with Hollywood glamour, Ian Schrager style.
