Mark Wahlberg
Friday July 27, 2001

With “Planet of the Apes" Mark Wahlberg has arrived. Last night Wahlberg went back home to south Boston for the movie's premiere.

Ladies of all ages lined up. Mark says, “Yeah well maybe they thought I was gonna bring George Clooney with me.”

After all, he and Clooney made a dynamic duo in the “Perfect Storm.” That film marked a turnaround for Wahlberg's career and his bad boy image first as rapper and underwear model Marky Mark and then as a thug in films like the “Basketball Diaries” and “Fear.”

It's a far cry from the mature Mark Wahlberg. In fact, the star announced "The Mark Wahlberg Foundation" to benefit youth programs. Mark's mom Alma and brother Donnie, formerly of the New Kids on the Block, told us how important it is to give back.

Donnie says, “You have to be able to put yourself in a position to be able to come back and help people.”

His mom says, “They never forgot where they came from. Donnie helped out a lot of kids. So I’m proud of both of them."

Many think it's incredible that Wahlberg, jailed at age 17 for assault, is now in the August Vanity Fair as the new Cary Grant.

Writer Leslie Bennetts says “Planet of the Apes” will turn a once rough and tumble kid into a full-fledged screen idol. “This time he's on his own. He's the star. He got ten million dollars and this rests on his shoulder.”
