Billy Crystal's "America's Sweetheart"
Thursday July 19, 2001

The curly haired comic tells “Extra,” this romantic comedy was a labor of love because of a dream cast that included everyone's favorite sweetheart, Julia Roberts. He says, “She's really funny and very smart. We had a really good chemistry together in the movie, as I did with Catherine and John"

Billy plays a frantic publicist in the film trying to keep recently split co-stars and lovers Catherine Zeta Jones and John Cusack together long enough to promote their new film, even if it means making nice with an overly friendly dog.

Billy explains, “There's a love scene with a dog that people seem to like"
Jumping into show business as a kid performing ethnic comedy sprung from New York Jewish roots, the 54 year-old actor recently told fellow comedian Martin Short about one family member who definitely left his mark.

Billy says, “I grew up in a house where a grandfather would greet you everyday like this, you're 8 years old whatta ya gonna do with your life?

What Billy did with his life would have made his grandpa proud. He has tackled Comedy, Acting, Directing, and Producing, including this year's Emmy-nominated HBO docu-drama "61" about his beloved Yankees' glory days. Even with all his accomplishments, Billy's family says he's a pretty regular guy. He says, "I never lived a scandalous life."

Billy's still married to his college girlfriend 31 years and two grown kids later, the Crystals are every bit a couple of American sweethearts.
