Summer of Madonna
Thursday July 19, 2001

The pop diva's common sense about dollars is one of the secrets revealed in J. Randy Taraborelli’s new book "Madonna: an intimate biography."

He tells “Extra” “She figures these people have enough money they can afford their own tickets. People have told me that she doesn’t allow friends to make long distance phone calls from her home. She does her own laundry when she's in hotels because she thinks prices they charge are outrageous and she's one of the richest entertainers in the world worth hundreds of millions. Deep down inside there's still that fear and Madonna has that she could turn around tomorrow and be broke."

Madonna does have more mouths to feed ...with new husband guy Ritchie and their son Rocco.

Gwyneth Paltrow was one of the few Hollywood stars invited to the christening and super secret Ritchie-Madonna wedding. Taraborelli credits Madonna with loosening Gwyneth up and describes a 2000 New Years Eve party. He says, “She and Madonna got up on a table and started doing a very sexy dance together that culminated in a sharing a very public kiss. Madonna reached over and kissed this girl like there was no tomorrow."

But Taraborelli says a new baby and husband have changed Madonna. Despite a public spat with Guy this week in London, the author says Madonna has mellowed.

Taraborelli adds, “For her to come to grips with the fact that it doesn’t matter how many Prada shoes you have you have to make room for toys was a real revelation and she has done a great job of it."
