Janet Jackson Divorce
Weeken July 14/15, 2001

Janet Jackson’s new chart topping CD "All For You" tells a very personal story of her failed marriage. It’s a story that could have legal consequences. Janet says, “It is a very personal album, writing about what's going on in my life.”

The superstar is in the throws of a nasty divorce with estranged husband Rene Elizondo. Although they signed a prenuptial agreement in 1990 keeping their property separate, Elizondo claims they had an oral agreement to split most of their assets, including profits from her singing career.

Jackson says there was never an agreement to split anything and puts her own spin on just who owns what in the song "truth" from her new CD. Here’s an excerpt:

“I had a career before now, didn't I? Sold out around the world, didn't I? I had a few hits before now didn't I?”

“Extra” learned Elizondo's camp feels Jackson has crossed the line by taking the mike before taking the stand. Though no one in the case will speak publicly, divorce attorney Craig Leeds says Jackson’s song could come back to haunt her in court.

“By going out in public and making the statements that have been implied by Miss Jackson she certainly could have poisoned the jury pool.”

In an interview with Blender magazine, Jackson denied that the songs are about her ex-husband. But Blender's senior editor Craig Marks says the denial was followed by an admission. He says, “First she said, when pressed by the writer, the songs really aren't about him. Then later she sort of parenthetically admitted well maybe a couple of lyrics are.”

In the alimony suit Elizondo says by not acknowledging the oral agreement to split at least 10 million dollars, Janet has caused him "humiliation, mental anguish, loss of energy and sleep, severe tension, profound shock and anxiety."

Will the song "Truth" become an exhibit for Elizondo? Craig Leeds says, “If in fact she is talking about Mr. Elizondo, that certainly could be inflammatory.”

For now Jackson has the world as a stage to give her take on the marriage.
