Backstreet Boys Postpone Tour
Thursday July 10, 2001

The Backstreet Boys have a new hit with "More Than That," but for one of the Boys the pressure of pop fame may be more than he can handle.

A.J. McLean, the band's resident rebel, is now being treated for anxiety, depression and alcohol abuse. Band member Brian Littrell says, “It was the first time I heard him say, ‘Guys I have a problem and I need to get help.’”

Brian, Nick, Howie D and Kevin broke the news to stunned fans on MTV. Seems living on the road and the recent death of his grandmother sent A.J. over the edge. Howie says, “We're only human beings and we love him as a brother.”

No one suspected a problem when just last week the band performed on the “Today” show. But on Tuesday, the Boys told Matt Lauer how alcohol had invaded A.J.'s life. Kevin said, “It was changing his personality and he wasn't being professional and it was affecting his voice.”

Alan Light, editor in chief of Spin magazine, says, “I think it would have a lot more negative impact if they tried to hide this.”

The band will be postponing their tour until August.
