Clive Owen
Thursday July 5, 2001

Everyone knows that Madonna is in the new BMW ad. But who is the guy behind the wheel?

It's British actor Clive Owen. He may seem like an odd fit alongside superstar Madonna in the ad directed by husband Guy Ritchie, but guy's already a star in his native England.

He's a man of few words on screen. Unnoticed in films “The Rich Man's Wife” opposite Halle Berry, Clive came to the attention of American audiences last year with his dark turn as a casino dealer in the thriller “Croupier.”

It was a performance that had some talking Oscar for the strong, brooding presence on screen. He says, “I don't approach a part and think, ‘oh I’ll be very brooding in this role,’ you know. I just do what I do.”

And he is doing a lot besides selling BMW’s. The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts graduate has a flowery new role. He stars in the new comedy “Greenfingers” playing a prison inmate turned championship gardener.

He says, “I was interested in playing a guy that was very locked off, very isolated, very antisocial, who gradually loosens up and warms up.”

And now that American audiences are warming up to Clive, he says he's ready for stardom in the states. “The bottom line is any actor wants to make movies and they make a lot of movies here. I've been doing a lot of good work in England, but anything that opens up the possibilities of doing more movies here is welcome.”
