The Return of Michael Jackson
Thursday July 5, 2001

He's thrilled us and he's been bad. As Michael Jackson approaches the 30 year mark as a solo artist and with a new album coming out, some are wondering is the king of pop still king, or is he history?

Back in the “Billie Jean” and “Beat It” days, there was no greater musical star than Michael Jackson. Then one weirdness after another seemed to find the gloved one. Spin magazine editor Alan Light says between the two bizarre marriages, to Debbie Rowe and Lisa Marie Presley, and the very serious child molestation charges, Michael’s got a potential PR problem with the upcoming release of the new CD called “Invincible.”

He says, “Since the child molestation charges and some of the other scandals, we really haven't seen Michael Jackson as a performer."

The music Michael’s made since his problematic past has done little to thrill. Then a super-rich Saudi Arabian reportedly withdrew a stash of cash from other Jackson business ventures. Now, Michael’s bracing for a comeback, in part with the help of international marketing maven Harald Neidhardt.

Neidhardt's hoping licensed products will help hype his upcoming album release and 30th anniversary concert in New York, where Michael’s invited reigning pop icons Britney Spears and N'Sync to sing along with him. Insiders say that's a smart move.

Alan Light says, "Kids today don't think of M.J. first as somebody who makes music, they think of him first as 'he's that weird guy with all those weird things around him.’"

Can Jackson’s image go from bad to better, and break records again?
