Tom Browkaw

He's been a welcome and trusted guest in American living rooms nearly every night for the past 20 years. But, amazingly, Tom Brokaw admits he still doesn't feel completely secure in his job as "NBC Nightly News" anchor.

"The contract is good and I can read the fine print a thousand times," Brokaw says. "But I think it may come to an end."

In a frank interview, Brokaw told "Extra" about his plans to actually bring it to an end himself after the 2004 presidential election. He says, "I'm not just going fly fishing. I'm going to work in TV news. What I’m going to do is give up nightly news."

The beloved 62-year-old newsman spoke of his impending retirement as we discussed his new memoir, "A Long Way Home," in which Tom writes of growing up a simple country boy in South Dakota and breaking into broadcasting during the early years of television. He says, "I really wrote it because it was a snapshot of a time that was kind of unique."

Now, Tom says, is a time when he's ready to finally step aside to make room for understudy Brian Williams and other promising NBC news talent like David Bloom, David Gregory, Campbell Brown, and Norah O'Donnell. Tom says, "All these young people rising up through the ranks deserve the opportunities that I had."
