Denzel Washington
It's the true story of an abused child who survived a troubled journey as a military sailor to find himself and inner peace. It was a life convincing Denzel Washington to jump on board. He says, "I was interested in it as a story. The first thing I probably said was, ‘Is this true?’"
The "Antwone Fisher" story was written by Fisher, who sold the script for a million dollars while working as a Sony Pictures security guard. Denzel plays the naval psychiatrist, counseling Antwone on his powerful and inspirational ride.
Washington makes his directorial debut with this movie, and despite owning a pair of Oscars for acting, he confesses that he questioned his own ability to pull off running the show. He says, "One side of me wanted to make it badly, and one side of me was afraid."
But Denzel had no doubts about giving the lead role to Derek Luke, a young newcomer who, at the time, was working in the Sony gift shop.
