J.K. Rowling
Wednesday November 14, 2001

Her imagination has conjured up images of fantastic castles, sports played on broomsticks, and ravenous three-headed dogs. Above the rest, one name has propelled author J.K. Rowling to international superstardom and bewitched readers of all ages: Harry Potter.

J.K. says, “I find it very difficult to say what appeals to people world wide about ‘Harry Potter.’"

Much like Rowling's beloved books about a young boy who discovers he's a wizard, her own life resembles a fairy tale. Divorced and living on welfare in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1993, this single mom came up with the idea for "Harry Potter" one day on a train and wrote the first book in a cafe while her daughter was napping.

Rowling sold the book for about four thousand dollars and to date, the first four "Harry Potter" books have earned more than half a billion-dollars.

The former welfare mom is now the second richest woman in Britain, after the Queen! Hollywood soon came calling.

After turning down countless movie deals, Rowling took a chance with Warner Brothers, and now her world of witchcraft and wizardry will at long last cast it's spell on this silver screen.

With a big studio on board, it took more than magic for Rowling to agree on a director. She turned down several world famous filmmakers before giving "Home Alone" and "Mrs. Doubtfire" director Chris Columbus the green light.

J.K. says, “He promised me that he would remain as faithful to the book as he possibly could and that he would have an all British cast. And he kept both promises."

Rowling, who loved the finished film, promises her fans the big screen version of Harry, Hedwig, and Hogwarts is pure magic.

J.K. Rowling is currently writing the fifth book in the series. It's called, "Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix."
