Hollywood Pools
Weekend
November 10/11, 2001
Swimming pools and movie stars - ever since Hollywood’s heyday, pools have been a symbol of celebrity success. The pools often reflected their famous owners. Fifties sex symbol Jayne Mansfield made hers pink and heart-shaped. Liberace's looked like a piano!

Robert Landau, co-author of "Hollywood Poolside", says "They were creating a lifestyle and image of Hollywood at the time to sell to the world."
Landau says stars like, Bogie and Bacall, Clark Gable, Lucille Ball and a young Ronald Reagan posed by their pools for publicity. Today’s celebrities, however, fiercely protect their privacy and usually not until their homes are up for sale, do we get a peek at their spectacular pools.
Paula Abdul designed a three-tiered pool, complete with bridges and waterfalls, then sold the property to Tom Arnold. The late, great Wilt Chamberlain dug deep - 16 feet deep - to build a stunning, indoor-outdoor water world.
Landau describes Chamberlain’s pool, which, he says, “can be entered from the inside, from the living room, or it can be entered from the outside."
Frank Sinatra's Palm Springs hideaway has a stunning mountain view pool, while Seinfeld’s former bachelor pad looks over L.A. from the Hollywood Hills. But to get to the most famous Hollywood party pool, you got to go down under, to Hugh Hefner's grotto at the Playboy mansion.
Underground, above ground, mountaintops to the desert, not a bad way to get your feet wet in Hollywood.
