Anne Robinson
Tuesday November 6, 2001

She's been described as a cross between Mary Poppins and a dominatrix. She is the Don Rickles of game show hosts, sending off losers with her trademark line, “You are the weakest link. Goodbye."

“Extra” spoke to Anne Robinson away from the bright lights of her hit show "The Weakest Link" and found her to be a surprisingly deep and sensitive woman. Robinson told us, “I suppose in a way I suffered quite a lot."

Robinson, who began her career as a serious journalist, says, “I wanted to be famous. First of all, I wanted to be an actress and then I thought I can be a journalist, because I loved writing. Then I could be famous and people think I was quite intelligent too."

Robinson tells “Extra” she fell “into a sea of alcohol” and destroyed her first career, her first marriage, and her first eight years of being a mother to daughter Emma.

Things were so bad, Robinson dropped down to a shocking 85 pounds. Her friends thought she was going to die, but one small event changed her life. She says, “When Emma was eight, I remember going to get another bottle of alcohol and the tears streaming down her eyes. The next day, I thought, 'That's it.' And I just stopped."

Robinson has written a new book called "Memoirs of an Unfit Mother" and few fans were aware of her painful journey. Few knew how hard it was for Anne to rebuild her relationship with Emma, to happily remarry, and to rebuild her career. What Anne has done is phenomenal. She's made the amazing transformation from newspaper writer to international TV star, all at the age of 57.

She says, “You have to dream your dreams and I always dreamt of being in New York and doing what I’m doing now."

So remember, behind the stern face and harsh one-liners, lies a softy. Well, at least most of the time.
