Angelina Jolie
It's Angelina Jolie in her most candid interview yet, talking about the movie that reshaped her destiny. She says, "I read the script and I cried."
In "Beyond Borders," Angelina plays a socialite philanthropist who leaves her husband for another aid worker played by Clive Owen. Angelina says the powerful story was the catalyst that led to her volunteer in third world countries and ultimately to adopt the young Cambodian son she calls Maddox. She says, "He's absolutely got my attitude, which is frightening."
Angelina reveals that after reading the script, the United Nations invited her to be its goodwill ambassador. She says, "I actually sat them down and said, ‘You do realize that people think I’m strange?’ There are a lot of rumors about me, and I said, ‘Do you really want me? Getting me involved might damage your reputation.’"
The U.N. accepted her anyway. It would turn out to be a tremendously courageous decision for the actress. She says, "I remember the first time I got a death threat because I decided to donate some money to some people."
That same strength helped her deal with some very public, painful challenges - starting with her split from Billy Bob Thornton.
And it’s because of her little boy that the Oscar winner chose not to live in Hollywood or New York, and to settle down in the English countryside. She says, "I didn't have a house growing up so I have a child and I want him to have a real home."
And to make sure Maddox knows his culture, she also keeps a place in his homeland of Cambodia. It is all part of Angelina's wish to live life on her own terms.
