'Ed'

"Ed" star Tom Cavanagh is taking on a role you haven't seen him in before-- director. Cavanagh is calling the shots on Wednesday's episode of "Ed," as well as acting in it.

In the show, Justin Long, also known as Warren Cheswick, mimics real-life talk show host Michael Essany. Only instead of his living room, Long is using Stuckeyville High School's audio-video lab. The episode also features Ed and his buddy buying a racehorse.

Not surprisingly, Cavanaugh’s cast members have been giving him grief about directing. Michael Ian Black, who plays bowling alley manager Phil Stubbs, managed to keep a straight face as he told "Extra," "Let’s be honest, a chimp could direct this show. What is it, you say, ‘Cut and action.’"

Long at least managed a backhanded compliment about Cavanagh. He says, "I love him because he tries so hard. He's such a sweet guy, like a little puppy."

But Cavanagh knows his cast mates' attitudes shouldn't be taken too seriously. He says, "Whether I’m yelling at them or not, they are still going to take every opportunity to try and screw me."
